Windies vs India: Virat Kohli hits back at critics after being targeted for not picking Rohit Sharma in Antigua Test

The Indian team came into the two-Test series in West Indies with a lot to prove. The first Test of the series played at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua was the inaugural one for both teams in the newly minted ICC World Test Championship.

The Virat Kohli-led side had a lot to consider before the game and the big question was who will play at the no.6 spot – Hanuma Vihari or Rohit Sharma? Vihari had been doing a decent job ever since making his Test debut in England and scoring a fifty on debut. Meanwhile, limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was chosen in the squad after being in a terrific form in World Cup. However, the team went with Vihari, as his off-spin bowling skills could come in handy.

However, with Vihari scoring a brilliant 93 in the second innings, helping Rahane put on a century stand and then taking India to a 418-run lead; Kohli was vindicated in his decision to pick him over Rohit. The Indian captain, who equaled the record for most Test wins-27 of MS Dhoni, mentioned that the decision was a taken after consultation with the team management.

“Vihari got a nod because the combination is important. He’s an effective part-time bowler and helps us when we need to catch up with the over-rate. We have a group discussion and then we decide what’s best for the team. There will always be opinions about the XI, but people will know that it’s in the interest of the team,” Virat Kohli said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Rohit had scored a fifty in his last Test against Australia in 2019 and boasts of a brilliant record against the Windies which include two centuries in his first two Tests against the opponents in 2013 in India, which included a score of 177 on debut. However, it seems like he would have to wait for his chance, as the second Test commences from August 30 at the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
