Windies vs India: Virat Kohli pulls off a one-handed screamer to send Evin Lewis packing

Virat Kohli had a day to remember in India’s second ODI versus the Windies at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad. After the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first, there was no stopping the bearded beast from Delhi. Virat scored his 42nd ODI century and guided his team to a significant score of 279. The target turned out to be a bridge too far for the Caribbean team.

Virat was also outstanding on the field, taking as many as three catches. Among them, the catch he took to dismiss Evin Lewis stood out. The stunner came at a stage when Lewis, one of the opening batters, was going all guns blazing, having scored 65 runs off 80 balls with eight fours and a six. Lewis lost his wicket to Kuldeep Yadav, who picked up two wickets, conceding 59 runs in 10 overs.

In the second delivery of the 28th over, Kuldeep churned out a short-pitched ball that spun away from Lewis. The southpaw batsman went on the back foot and tried to loft the ball over the cover region. Even as he timed the ball to perfection, he didn’t get enough elevation to clear the fielder.

Kohli was patrolling the covers and seeing the ball coming to him at the rate of knots, he pulled out a jump. He went at the leather with his right hand and managed to latch on to it. After taking the stunner, Virat Kohli put a finger on his lips as if to silence the Caribbean supporters present at the venue.

With the bat, Virat Kohli again showed why he is regarded as one of the best in the world. He came to bat after Sheldon Cottrell used the DRS to good effect to get rid of Shikhar Dhawan. He got support from Shreyas Iyer, who scored 71. Kohli went on to play until the 42nd over and scored 120 off 125 balls.

His knock was laced with 14 boundaries and one six. En route his incredible knock, he also made a couple of records. Kohli surpassed Sourav Ganguly as the overall leading run-scorer in One-Day cricket. He also has the most ODI runs versus the Windies, overhauling Javed Miandad’s tally.
