Albie Morkel, the former South African all-rounder was noted down as a brilliant player, who played for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He won several games for MS Dhoni and Co. in the cash-rich league. But, one match that neither he nor his fans can ever forget will be the one between CSK and RCB from 2012 edition of the T20 tournament.
The 38-year-old recently talked about his blissful knock of 28 runs off 7 balls that helped CSK in snatching a win against RCB from the jaws of defeat. In IPL 2012, the Daniel Vettori-led RCB managed a total of 205 runs in stipulated 20 overs. During the chase, CSK needed an improbable 43 runs off last 12 balls.
It is magical to look back at, says Albie Morkel
Albie Morkel was the batsman on the strike. So, the RCB skipper handed the ball in the penultimate over to Virat Kohli, who is reckoned as a part-time bowler. The former Proteas all-rounder smacked 28 runs in the over that brought the equation down to 15 runs off the last six balls to turn the game on its head. Morkel got dismissed in the 20th over but the damage was done as the CSK went on win the match off the final ball.
Talking about the same in an interaction, Morkel said that he still doesn’t know why Daniel Vettori gave the penultimate over to Kohli. The South African recalled that he was just thinking to smack some boundaries in order to bring the target in the reach and went on to smack 28 runs. Moreover, he also cleared that the current RCB skipper shouldn’t have bowled the crucial over.
“Look, that’s one of those evenings… once again, we were out of the game. RCB had the game in their bag… I had no idea why they bowled Virat. All due respect to him, he shouldn’t have bowled that over anyway. We lost a wicket in the last ball of the 18th over.
“The 19th and 20 were left. We needed 42 off two. I walked in at No. 7. You look at the scoreboard and you’re like, ‘oh no, 40-odd off two, that’s impossible’. You walk in and then you see Virat’s bowling, then I thought ‘if I can connect a few, maybe we can get close. That moment lasted about 15 minutes in my career. It is magical to look back at,” Morkel said in a YouTube chat with CSK.
