The Women’s Ashes got off to a thrilling start with Australia Women edging past England Women by two wickets in first of the 3-match ODI series. The home side was reduced to 19/4 after losing the toss as Ellyse Perry picked up three wickets in her opening spell. Natalie Sciver’s 64-run knock and lower-order’s contributions could only get take to 177. England bowlers did put an effort to take wickets early on Meg Lanning and Perry fell cheaply. Alyssa Healy kept the Southern Stars on the right track with her 71-ball 66.

She struck eight fours and two maximums but the team kept losing wickets after her dismissal. When nine runs were needed with two wickets in hand, Delissa Kimmince struck a boundary and Katherine Brunt followed it by conceding five wides to bring an end to the game. This brought an end to England Women’s 7-match winning streak in ODIs and 15 consecutive International matches while Australia Women extended their winning streak to ten in the format.

Pitch Condition/Report:

Leicester’s Grace Road had an interesting pitch for the Women’s Ashes opener. There was a lot of movement on offer for the pacers with the new ball while the spinners got a bit of help as the ball got softer. Across 11 Women’s ODIs hosted by this venue since 2016, the chasing sides won all five times where they reduced the opponent to 220 and lower. In remaining six matches, the batting first teams posted 250+ and won every time.

Team News:

(Will be added when there is an update)

Power Picks:

Jess Jonassen is one of the underrated all-rounders in the Women’s cricket. The left-hander has 476 runs to her name in 60 ODIs at an average of 17.62 and claimed 89 wickets at 21.79 average. Since 2018, Jonassen’s numbers are even better as she bagged 19 wickets from seven matches with two 4-fers and a 5-wicket haul. She also scored 72 runs from four innings in this period.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Ellyse Perry, Natalie Sciver, Jess Jonassen and Katharine Brunt will be crucial given the expected slow nature of the track. Meg Lanning can hardly be ignored as captain or vice-captain when it comes to ODIs. Amy Jones had a good run with the bat coming into the series while Alyssa Healy could be the X-factor in the game.

Other Captain/Vice-Captain Options (in order) – Tammy Beaumont, Megan Schutt, Heather Knight, Ashleigh Gardner, Anya Shrubsole.

Suggested Playing XI No.1 for Fantasy Cricket:

Keeper – Alyssa Healy

Batters – Meg Lanning, Tammy Beaumont, Rachael Haynes

All-Rounders – Katherine Brunt, Ellyse Perry (VC), Natalie Sciver (C), Jess Jonassen

Bowlers – Megan Schutt, Laura Marsh, Sophie Ecclestone

Suggested Playing XI No.2 for Fantasy Cricket:

Keeper – Amy Jones (VC)

Batters – Heather Knight, Nicole Bolton, Meg Lanning

All-Rounders – Katherine Brunt, Natalie Sciver, Ashleigh Gardner, Jess Jonassen (C)

Bowlers – Delissa Kimmince, Sophie Ecclestone, George Wareham

Expert Advice:

Either of teams is not expected to make any changes despite failing big time with the bat. The only swap could be seen in England’s line-up between Fran Wilson and Danielle Wyatt. Wilson got unlucky with umpire’s decision which could help in retaining her place.

Probable Winners:

Australia Women are expected to go 2-0 up in the ODI series while England Women will have an edge if they chase.
