Cricket Australia's biggest carnival Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is one of the most premier franchise league cricket in the world. Notably, the tournament kickstarted in 2015, in a bid to give female cricketers a big platform to showcase their talent just like their counterparts.
WBBL brings all the top international from across the globe along with local cricketers together to celebrate cricket and learn hands on like never before. In the inaugural edition, franchise Sydney Thunder lifted the title while their city counterparts Sydney Sixers finished as the runners up.
As the tournament expanded its wings with time, eight teams took part in the covered cricket event. These BBL teams are- Melbourne Stars Women, Melbourne Renegades Women, Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Adelaide Strikers, Perth Scorchers Women, Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat, respectively.
Now speaking of the winners over the years, Sydney Sixers were one of the early dominators as they won the WBBL title twice in tandem in 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. Apart from them, Brisbane Heat took the honours of replicating Sixers to win back-to-back titles in 2018-19 and 2019-20 editions. The same pattern followed, however, with Adelaide Strikers repeating the history like early winners by clinching the title in the years 2022-23 and 2023-24.
WBBL 2024 Edition Winner
In the recently concluded WBBL 2024 season, team Melbourne Renegades Women defeated Brisbane Heat Women by just seven runs via the DLS (Duckworth Louis-Stern Method) to win the grand finale. Star West Indian all rounder Hayley Matthews was adjudged as the ‘Player of the Match’ for her terrific 69- run knock and two wickets in the summit clash.
Now given the high stakes in a competitive tournament like WBBL things can take a wild turn as any team can beat any opponent on their, thereby adding to the sheer unpredictable competition, the WBBL T20 cricket competition brings to the fore.
