The three-team Women’s T20 Challenge 2022 is scheduled to be played from May 23 to May 28. In a latest interaction, former Indian cricketers Nikhil Chopra and Mohammad Azharuddin shared their views on the Women’s T20 Challenge and the proposed women’s IPL.
Chopra thinks the domestic structure of Indian women’s cricket has improved and thinks the Women’s T20 Challenge will provide an opportunity for the domestic players to showcase their talent. He added that the Indian team will surely find quality cricketers from this tournament. The former bowler added that it will be a great opportunity for the women cricketers.
“The big question was if the domestic structure has many players for organizing the T20 tournament. The way the domestic cricket has been played for some time is fantastic. Certainly, we will get a diamond in the rough as the domestic players will feature against the international cricketers. The likes of Smriti Mandhana, and Jemimah Rodrigues progressed through this stage as well, and the nursery will get big. It’s a great initiative and opportunity for all the women cricketers,” said Chopra on Sky247.net presents ‘Not Just Cricket’ Show on CricTracker.
Women’s IPL will be a good step: Mohammad Azharuddin
Azharuddin reckoned that the women’s IPL will be a welcome step as the players have been performing well. He added that the tournament should begin with four teams, and if it finds success, then the board can think to increase the teams. The former Indian captain is keen to see the Indian pool of players in the tournament.
“It is a good step as the players have been performing quite well. The tournament should start with four teams, and when you gain popularity, the teams can be increased. After the first season, the board will now know how to organize the tournament in the coming years. It will be interesting to see the pool of players in women’s cricket,” said Azharuddin.
