After humiliating West Indies in the last match, Mithali Raj and her team India were brought back down to earth by England as the Women in Blue lost their second match in the ongoing World Cup by four wickets at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Right-arm off-break bowler Charlie Dean was the wrecker in chief for the English side as she took her career-best figures of 4/23 in 8.2 overs to bundle out India for a paltry 134 runs.

Speaking of how the match panned out, England’s Heather Knight won the toss and elected to field first. Opener Smriti Mandhana scored 35 runs off 58 deliveries but Yastika Bhatia, skipper Mithali Raj, and Deepti Sharma were all disappointing with all three of them not even scoring a total of ten runs between them. Anya Shrubsole took two top-order wickets as she reached her personal milestone of 100 ODI scalps. Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh showed some fight with her 56 balls 33 runs knock but it wasn’t enough as England bowlers particularly Dean dismantled the Indian batting line-up.

Chasing 135, England also found themselves in big trouble when they lost two wickets for just four runs on the board. But captain Heather Knight and Nat Sciver then joined hands to stitch the 65-runs partnership before Sciver was dismissed for 45 runs. Meghna Singh took three scalps but Skipper Knight made sure she remained unbeaten to take her side home at the end. Knight scored 53 not out as England got off the mark in this World Cup with their first victory after three straight losses. Meanwhile, India lost their second match of the tournament and have now won two and lost two. Dean, for her magnificent spell, was adjudged with the Player of the Match award.
