It was also an all-time most engaging women’s cricket event on digital platforms.
The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, held in New Zealand, was the most engaging women’s cricket event on digital platforms and was also the third-most digitally-engaging ICC event ever after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, confirmed the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Women’s World Cup reportedly garnered as much as 1.64 billion video views across all ICC channels.
The Chief Executive of the ICC, Geoff Allardice, said that the governing body was “delighted” with the fan engagement and its numbers. He said that the approach of creating heroes in the women’s game and taking it closer to the fans has resulted in such record-breaking numbers.
“We are absolutely delighted with the record-breaking digital fan engagement numbers of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022,” Allardice was quoted as saying by Insider Sport.
“As a key strategic pillar to growing the game our focus has been deepening engagement with existing fans and bringing new audiences to the sport,” the ICC Chief Executive added. “The innovative approach to creating heroes in the women’s game and taking the sport closer to fans has resulted in world leading numbers.”
The excitement generated around the tournament has put us in a great position: Allardice
Allardice reckons that the competitive nature of the game along with the excitement created around the event put the cricketing body in a great position to keep building on the success. The ICC content viewership for the World Cup in New Zealand also saw a 45 percent rise over the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup which gathered 1.1 billion views, which is 16 times more than the number of views garnered in the 2017 Women’s World Cup.
“The competitive nature of the cricket and the excitement generated around the tournament has put us in a great position to continue to build on the success of this year’s event. With the focus now on providing fans with more engaging content throughout the 100% Cricket Year of Women’s Cricket leading into the inaugural U19 and senior Women’s T20 World Cups in early 2023,” added Allardice.
