Cricket West Indies has named a 15-member squad for the upcoming 50-over Women’s World Cup to be played in New Zealand. Stafanie Taylor who has been their regular captain would be leading the team going into the World Cup. A recent concussion meant Taylor had to miss the final ODI of the four-match series against South Africa, with Anisa Mohammed filling into her role for that game.
Mohammed has been named the designated vice-captain of the team for the tournament. The squad announced will see five of the fifteen players making their World Cup debut. Selector Ann Browne- John stated they are happy with the squad’s balance as there is a good mix of both experience and youth.
“The squad selected shows a blend of youth and experience, Afy Fletcher’s return strengthens the bowling department as she continues to be a world class legspinner. We have Anisa Mohammed who’s playing in her fifth World Cup and will help guide the younger ones selected. We have five players who have had their maiden Cricket World Cup selection,” Ann Browne-John said according to Cricbuzz.
“The team just completed a series against South Africa where the players got good preparation before the Tournament. There were some relatively good showings with a few players having outstanding performances and it is expected that they would raise their levels even further during the competition,” she added.
Afy Fletcher back from her maternity break
The West Indies lost 2-1 in the recently concluded series against South Africa with a game being washed out to rain. Senior bowler Afy Fletcher skipped the series as she was on a maternity break. However, the leg spinner is now back with the squad travelling to New Zealand for the World Cup.
The marquee event is to be played from 4th March to 3rd April 2022. It is to be an eight-team tournament with 31 matches to be played in total. England won the last edition in 2017 while Australia leads as being crowned the maximum number of times, with six trophies to their name.
