Women's World T20 2018: Meet the first couple to bat together in an ICC tournament

The Women’s World T20 2018 witnessed a rare scene. When South Africa’s Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp joined each other in the middle they became the first ever couple to bat together in an ICC tournament. This happened when South Africa Women faced Sri Lanka Women in the league game on Tuesday.
The all-rounders had tied the knot in July this year. The news of their marriage was made official by the South African women team’s Twitter handle. These two are only the second set of current international teammates to get married after New Zealand’s Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu.
The couple bail the side out of trouble
In the 8th match of the World T20, Sri Lanka Women were put into bat first. They didn’t pull off a convincing performance and managed to post 99 runs on the board for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs despite getting 24 runs in the form of extras. S Siriwardene with 21 runs was the highest scorer in the innings while S Ismail picked three wickets. Furthermore, Niekerk and Kapp picked up one wicket each.
The chase started off on a poor note for the Proteas. The openers Lee and Wolvaardt were dismissed for 1 and 4 runs respectively. The side was down to 6/2 within two overs. At this stage, Niekerk joined hands with Kapp. Together, they added 67 runs which helped bail the side out of trouble. While Kapp was dismissed for 38 runs, the skipper was unbeaten on 33. South Africa chased down the target in 18.3 overs.
Van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp made their international debut in a gap of two days during the 2009 Women’s World Cup.
South Africa’s opening game in the tournament against England was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. They will be facing the mighty Windies Women on Thursday which is a crucial encounter for both the sides.
