Jeffrey Vandersay is a surprise pick by the Lankan selectors for the 2019 World Cup, as various other tweakers are waiting in the pipeline. The cricketer from Wattala is a leg-spinner who has a number of variations in his bag of tricks. Till now Vandersay has represented the island nation in 11 games in which he has dished out 10 wickets at an economy rate of 5.75. Along with his bowling, he is a decent lower-order batsman, but Dimuth Karunaratne‘s side wants him to be their premier spinner in this English summer.

The leggie made his debut in 2015 but only got a few chances because of the constant chopping and changing of the team. As Akila Dananjaya who has been a star for the Lankan Lions in the last couple of years hit a rough patch earlier in the year, Vandersay was called up, and since then he has put up some compatible performances. The board has gambled by picking him in such a tight competition.

Unless Jeffrey Vandersay has a breakthrough tournament, it is highly unlikely that he will be preferred in the next World Cup ahead of youngsters like Dananjaya and Lasith Embuldeniya.
