World Cup 2019: Carlos Brathwaite makes a hilarious fielding attempt vs New Zealand

Carlos Brathwaite hasn’t had the best of outings in the World Cup 2019. The 30-year-old picked up a three-wicket haul versus Australia at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. But he hasn’t done anything of sorts owing to which he has been in an out of the team. To his delight, the all-rounder has gotten a chance in the match against New Zealand at the Old Trafford in Manchester.

The same is due to the reason that the hulk-like Andre Russell didn’t get fit for the all-important encounter. However, Brathwaite had a rather funny start to his outing. The incident took place in the first over after the Caribbean team won the toss and elected to field first. A shot off Kiwis’ skipper Kane Williamson’s willow raced off the turf and the big man gave it a valiant chase.

The leather slowed down as it was nearing the cover boundary, but Brathwaite pulled off a dive that went horribly wrong. The big man fell flat on his abdomen, rather than sliding towards the ball, he put his weight down and the slide was not just obstructed but he didn’t move after going down. It made an absolute mockery of his effort.

Evin Lewis, who was backing him up to the boundary, stopped the ball from hitting the ropes and hurled the ball in. To their dismay, the batsmen had put in the extra yard and ran four runs.

An exceptional start for Windies

After their seven-wicket defeat against Bangladesh, the Caribbean team was in with a must-win scenario for this game. Apart from Brathwaite, they also gave Kemar Roach and Ashley Nurse a chance in place of Shannon Gabriel and Darren Bravo. After fielding first, their fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell got them off to a masterful start. He bowled a Yorker to Martin Guptill that got him dismissed.

Initially, the on-field umpire didn’t give the decision in the fielding team’s favour. But Jason Holder opted for the DRS that came to their rescue. In the same over, Cottrell piled on more agony for the Black Caps as he castled Colin Munro, who also managed to bag a golden duck. Thereafter, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor got New Zealand back in the contest, staving off the belligerent Windies pace attack.
