Veteran Pakistan batting all-rounder Shoaib Malik is having a terrible World Cup in England this year. Playing in the mega event for one final time, the 37-year-old failed in two crunch games in the tournament to add to his team’s woes and the fans have taken even his wife Sania Mirza on this time. Shoaib fell for a golden duck at No.6 in the match against India at Old Trafford on Sunday when Pakistan were chasing a mammoth target of 337.

In the match before in Taunton, too, a delivery from Pat Cummins nicked his bat’s inside edge and landed in the gloves of the wicket-keeper Alex Carey in the very second ball that he faced. On both occasions, his dismissal left Pakistan’s chase in disarray since No.6 is a key batting position.

On Sunday, Malik, one of the two veteran batsmen in the Pakistan side apart from Mohammad Hafeez, needed to resurrect the innings after his team lost some quick wickets after a 104-run partnership between Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam. But he got played on the very next ball after Hafeez fell from Hardik Pandya and Pakistan’s challenge was all but over with half their side back into the hut with just 129 on board.

Shoaib criticised for dining out late night before match

The angry fans lashed out at Malik and didn’t spare his sportsperson wife either. In fact, Malik and Sania found themselves in controversy after they were photographed in a restaurant in England late in the night before the India clash. The video also went viral online and Sania lashed out at the fans accusing them of violating their privacy. The duo, who got married in 2010, also had their son Izhaan Mirza Malik born last year with them.

Malik, one of the few remaining cricketers who made their international debut in the 1990s, has played three games in the World Cup so far, scoring just eight runs and taking one wicket. Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar also blasted him after the Old Trafford debacle and mocked their experience factor.

Pakistan have now only four games in hand to change their fortunes in this World Cup and for Malik, time is running out even faster.
Here are some of the reactions that came on Twitter targeting Sania after Shoaib’s forgettable show in Manchester:
