Quite a surprising turn of events. Considering the fact that most people expected it to be an India – Australia finale, the current scenario where both teams got knocked out in the semi-finals is definitely a shocker. Hats-off to New Zealand and England for fighting the expected and making it so far. The best part is that both teams have never won the World Cup before. Being the dark horse, NZ might be the favourites of the finals of the World Cup 2019.
England thrashed New Zealand by 119 runs in the teams’ final group match but this is a whole new ball game altogether. Who is your favourite? Join the World Cup Finale in England by playing it on Fantain Fantasy. Here is all you need to read for both the teams before picking your Fantain XI.
Team News:
New Zealand
The round-robin phase saw New Zealand peak in the beginning of the tournament and then lose three consecutive matches. They sneaked into the semi-finals thanks to a better NRR than Pakistan.
The team was clinical and together in their performance against World Cup Favourites India. Rain was no bar as the match stretched into the second day. Difficult pitch. Controversial Dhoni-Run-Out. It all happened as NZ turned out to be the better team that day.
This is the second appearance in the finals. New Zealand lost to Australia in 2015.
Possible XI: Ross Taylor, Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson (c), Colin de Grandhomme, Trent Boult, Tom Latham (wk), James Neesham, Matt Henry, Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Henry Nicholls
England
England has yet to win the World Cup but has been runners-up three times (1979, 1987, 1992). This is the fifth time that England plays host to the tournament.
A mixed journey in the round-robin phase, England peaked towards the end unlike their current rival to make it to the finals with a bang. This is their turf, which gives them the slightest edge against the Black Caps.
England surprised everyone by defeating the mighty Australians by 8 wickets. Not only did the English bowlers stump the top order of the Aussies, the four batting pillars – Roy, Root, Bairstow and Morgan – took charge to lead England to the finals.
Quite a few players pulled their weight for England in the semi-finals and the timing was impeccable. Should this continue, we are looking at England winning the trophy in front of a proud and happy home audience.
Should England win, the general feeling would be – About Time.
Possible XI: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (c), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (wk), Chris Woakes, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
