World Cup 2019: Michael Vaughan says he will be staggered if Jofra Archer doesn’t play in upcoming showpiece events
Veteran Stuart Broad opines that the speedster possesses everything to become a big thing in the bowling department.
Imam Ul Haq and Fakhar Zaman tasted the real wrath of Jofra Archer’s pace on a wet day at Kennington Oval in London, as he made both the left-handers look clueless in a 10-ball spell. Though the match was abandoned due to rain, Archer impressed a lot with figures of 1 wicket for 4 runs in 6 overs. Earlier, he had made quite an impression in his debut T20I and ODI some time back.
The Barbados-born fast bowling all-rounder has made quite a noise after he wasn’t included in the England preliminary squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup to be played in England. He has made his case after terrific displays of fast bowling where he touched 95 mph with ease in the Big Bash League and the IPL 2018 and 2019. Even the ECB reduced the qualification criteria from seven years to three, so that Archer could make it in time for the mega ICC event.
Archer gets veteran Stuart Broad backing
Many former cricketers like Andrew Flintoff and Michael Vaughan have openly advocated for him to be included in World Cup squad, to begin with. “I would be absolutely staggered if he’s not taking part in the Ashes series as well as the World Cup. He’s just got a gift and when you get that kind of quality you have to get those players involved in all formats of the game,” Michael Vaughan was quoted as saying by NDTV.com
Even fellow fast bowler Liam Plunkett, one of Archer’s competitors for a World Cup squad, felt that it was surreal to see him bowl at more than 90 mph without any apparent strain. Even Test captain Joe Root felt that looking at Archer bowl made him think of what he could do in the upcoming Ashes.
Vaughan while acknowledging Root, the former said, “He’s different, he plays cricket in the way I wished I could have played the game in terms of mentality. You speak to any psychologist and they will say ‘you’ve just got to play another game’. It’s very difficult at the highest level, there’s just too much going on in people’s minds. He (also) bats, he fields like a gun. He’ll be playing Test cricket soon. I will drive personally to Sheffield and drag him (Root) out of bed if he (Archer) is not involved in some stage during the Ashes.”
Archer’s inclusion in Test setup got support from veteran Stuart Broad as well, who said that Archer’s action was easily repeatable, he bowls quick and is exciting and given that he gets into a great rhythm, he possesses everything to become a successful bowler for England.
