World Cup 2019: Mushfiqur Rahim gets hit on hand during net session ahead of WI game

Ever since the start of World Cup 2019 teams have been struggling with regular injuries to key players. Almost all the competing sides have been plagued by some form of injury or another. India too have not been an exception as their star opener Shikhar Dhawan broke his thumb while batting against Australia at the Oval last Sunday to get ruled out of the fray for a few weeks. To add to the long list of injured players in this World Cup featuring the likes of Dale Steyn, Lungi Ngidi, Andre Russell, Marcus Stoinis, Jos Buttler and others, the latest victim is Bangladesh wicketkeeper, Mushfiqur Rahim.

The diminutive cricketer, who is playing in his fourth World Cup, was hit on his right hand during the team’s practice session in Taunton on Saturday. The 32-year-old was seen walking off the field with an official and had his right gloves off. The Tigers will be hoping that his injury his not too serious to sit out in the all-important game against the West Indies at the same ground on Monday.

Mushfiqur an important player in Bangladesh line-up

Mushfiqur scored a magnificent 78 off 80 balls against the Proteas in the first game and after 19 against New Zealand, made 44 vs England during a chase of a stiff target of 387. The veteran keeper had also come under criticism for his faulty attempt to effect a run-out against New Zealand at the Oval, a game which Bangladesh lost narrowly by 2 wickets. The man is a key member of this Bangladeshi side and will have to play a major role if they want to reach the semi-finals.

The Asian team hasn’t played a match in this World Cup since June 8 when they were thrashed by hosts England by 106 runs. Their game against Sri Lanka in Bristol on June 11 was washed out. With one win from four matches, Mashrafe Mortaza’s side is ranked seventh in the table of 10 teams and it will need some urgent wins to climb up.

Bangladesh’s only win so far has come against South Africa who they stunned by 21 runs in the first game of this edition. The West Indies also have three points from four games with one win, two losses and a wash-out but they are ranked ahead of the Tigers owing to a better net run-rate.
