World Cup 2019: Rohit Sharma says outside opinions don’t matter for close knit Team India

The Indian team will be one of the strongest contenders to win the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019, based on their second spot in the ICC ODI team ranking. Their overall success in the leadup to the tournament including the ODI series win away from home in South Africa and Australia and wins over West Indies, and Sri Lanka at home.

Rohit Sharma, who led the Indian team to the Asia Cup 2018 triumph in the absence of Virat Kohli, will look forward to playing in England, a place where he got a second win to his career. He recently stated that the Indian team is a close-knit unit and isn’t influenced by opinions of outsiders. Rohit will be playing his first World Cup as vice-captain of the Indian team and has a good record in England as well as in ICC events.

The team is like a fortress, says Rohit

“The team is like a fortress. There are 15 people inside it and whatever anyone can say from the outside, the 15 inside will not get influenced,” Rohit was quoted as saying by India Today.

He also spoke about the headspace he is in at the moment given his form with the bat. “I am aware of my role. Shikhar Dhawan and I know we have to lay the foundation. I enjoy the challenge. I am in the best mental space as a batsman. With maturity, I have been able to understand my game better. I have learnt from my mistakes in the past,” the 32-year-old said.

The Men in Blue’s bowling attack going into the World Cup is considered to be one of the best in the world. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead the pace attack with Vijay Shankar and Hardik Pandya as the backups, while Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja taking lead as spinners in the team.

“Certainly, this is one of the most complete bowling attacks. I am not bothered about Kuldeep Yadav’s lack of success in the Indian Premier League because franchise cricket and playing for India are very different. The secret to Jasprit Bumrah’s success is he understands the batsman very very well and keeps it as simple as possible. While he has all the skills and all the balls in his repertoire,” Rohit said.
