The India and Pakistan tie in the upcoming ICC World Cup is something that everyone is looking forward to. The match will take place on June 16 at Old Trafford Ground in Manchester, a hub of South Indian community, which had witnessed the last time these two teams met in a World Cup game in England back in 1999.
However, the Indian fans might not have the best of memories of these two teams’ last encounter in England, which came in finals of ICC Champions Trophy 2017, where Pakistan defeated India to become champions. Sarfaraz Ahmed and Virat Kohli will be eager to renew their rivalry, as Kohli was rested for the Asia Cup 2018, where India got their payback under the leadership of Rohit Sharma in Dubai.
Sarfaraz Ahmed’s one-line answer leaves other captains and media in laughter
Sarfaraz Ahmed, along with other captains of the participating teams attended a media interaction before the tournament began and it proved to be a tension buster for everyone present, as the captains presented insights into their plans for their teams going into the tournament. Gradually the topic shifted to the India and Pakistan match given all the tension that happened and the political upheaval between the two countries.
A journalist asked Kohli and Sarfaraz whether their players are under extra pressure this time, given the recent history between the two countries and some of the last games that the two teams played. A journalist asked Indian skipper Virat Kohli, “All matches are very important but the match against Pakistan is a high-pressure game, how do you look at it?”
Virat Kohli was more elaborate in his answer and touched upon various variables and said, “India-Pakistan is always a very very anticipated match but we keep saying this again and again. If you ask the players it’s very different from how the fans look at the game compared to how players play it. Yes, we feel the anticipation, you feel the excitement of the fans when you enter the stadium. But as soon as you step on to the field it’s professional, a bowler trying to execute his skills a batsman trying to execute his skills to the best of their potential.”
He further admitted that pressure is definitely there because the atmosphere of the ground and support from fans makes it all more important than it seems. But then he mentioned that at the end of the day, it was just a game of cricket for all of us. The journalist turned to Sarfaraz Ahmed after Kohli was done with his reply and repeated the same question to him as well.
Sarfaraz Ahmed’s reply left all the fellow captains and audience in splits, as he said, “My answer is also the same (laughs).”
