World Cup 2019: Sheldon Cottrell is raring to pull out his trademark salute against India
Cottrell has picked up nine wickets in the World Cup so far.
Sheldon Cottrell has turned out to be a genuine wicket-taker for the Windies in the 2019 World Cup. The left-armer has been exceptional with the new leather, giving his team early breakthroughs. Even in the death overs, he hasn’t flattered to deceive by any stretch of the imagination. Windies have had a rather disappointing campaign thus far in the mega event, having lost four of their six matches and Cottrell to a certain extent has been the stand out performer at least with the ball.
The Caribbean team still has a chance of progressing to the semis, but for that to happen a lot of permutations and combinations need to go in their favour. Jason Holder and Co are languishing in the eight position on the points table with just three points can’t afford any further falls here on. Their next match is versus India, the recently crowned number-one ODI team, at the Old Trafford in Manchester.

West Indies haven’t beaten the Men in Blue since the 1992 World Cup and bearing in mind the form of both the teams, Holder’s men need to pull a rabbit out of the hat in order to win. The onus will again be on Cottrell to step up and deliver. The southpaw picked up a four-wicket haul against New Zealand at the same venue. He got rid of both the Kiwi openers – Colin Munro and Martin Guptill – in his very first over.
Cottrell can’t wait to pull out his trademark salute in Windies’ upcoming encounter. The fast bowler is a part of the Jamaican Defense Force and his salute is a mark of respect to them. He starts his celebration with a smile on his face, followed by a parade after which he gives a grand salute. Thereafter, he arches back to finish his celebration. Recently his junior mates’ Dougie notched a four-wicket haul in Nottingham and saluted everyone.
Cottrell congratulated his mate and expressed his desire to replicate a similar performance in Manchester. The speedster took to Twitter and wrote, “Big day today. Hoping to replicate my mate Dougie’s recent success at Long Bennington Primary School in Nottingham. He took 4 wickets and saluted after every one. Congratulations on your team’s success Dougie!”
