The 12th edition of the Cricket World Cup is another 27 days away and all teams are giving final touches to their final preparations for the mega event. Former champions Sri Lanka are also gearing up for the mega event even though their recent performances do not make the experts too optimistic about their chances in the tournament. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Friday also unveiled the team’s kit for the upcoming tournament.
The Sri Lankan kit chosen for the WC features turtle-like figures instead of the more familiar lion while the colours include light yellow and blue besides their original dark blue shed. Some fans mocked the absence of the lion saying turtles suited the current lot while others appreciated it. Sri Lanka will be playing their first match at the WC on June 1 when they will take on 2015 finalists New Zealand in Cardiff.

Sri Lanka decided to make Dimuth Karunaratne captain
In a move that surprised the cricketing world, Sri Lankan selectors decided to go with their Test skipper Dimuth Karunaratne as the captain of the side. The 31-year-old batsman, who led the Lankans to a historic 2-0 win over South Africa recently, has not played in an ODI since the last World Cup in 2015.
However, it was being said that since the Lankans have failed to put up a good performance under a number of captains in recent times, the wise men decided to pick Karunaratne since he impressed as the Test captain in SA. Karunaratne replaced veteran pace bowler Lasith Malinga at the top.
Sri Lanka also overlooked a number of experienced players for their WC squad like Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal and Niroshan Dickwella and picked all-rounders. The Lankans were recently walloped by New Zealand and South Africa in away series in the 50-over format and it will be an uphill task for them to do something similar to 1996 when they won their only world title.
