World Cup 2019: Vijay Shankar suffers an injury scare ahead of Afghanistan clash
Shankar bowled extremely well against Pakistan picking two wickets in 5.2 overs.
Team India has remained unbeaten after four matches in the ongoing World Cup amidst the injuries hitting them. While Shikhar Dhawan has been already ruled out of the tournament due to a thumb injury, Bhuvneshwar Kumar walked off the field at the start of the innings due to hamstring tightness against Pakistan. While there is no update on when he will be back on the field, the Men in Blue suffered yet another injury scare ahead of their game against Afghanistan.
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a yorker in the nets which hit Vijay Shankar’s toes and was apparently in extreme pain. The physio attended him soon and though there is nothing to worry as of now, India would love to avoid any more injuries to their players with the World Cup going deep.
The team source later cleared that the pain decreased in the evening. “Yes, Vijay was in pain but it has subsided by the evening. Hopefully, there’s nothing scary,” the source was quoted as saying by Quint.
Shankar – A crucial player for India
Vijay Shankar is an important player for India in the squad now. Though he is the designated number four, the all-rounder is being used as a floater depending on the match situation at the moment. Moreover, he superbly stepped up in the need of the hour for the team and also became the first Indian bowler to pick up a wicket off his first ball in the World Cup.
Shankar pinned Imam-ul-Haq in front of the stumps and later castled Sarfaraz Ahmed as well to return with impressive figures of 2/22 in 5.2 overs. With Bhuvi still under observation, Shankar continues to play a crucial role with the ball as well and the management would love to see him injury free. India next face Afghanistan on Saturday who have lost all their five matches and would be looking to improve their show.
