In a number of instances over the last few months, it has been seen that the bails don’t get dislodged despite the ball making a strong connection with the stumps. In yesterday’s match between India and Australia at the Kennington Oval in London, another such incident took place. Speedster Jasprit Bumrah was hard done even as left-handed batsman David Warner got a lucky break.

Bumrah churned out a short delivery and Warner hopped to tackle it. However, he got an inside edge and the leather rolled on to the leg stump. To everyone’s surprise, the bails didn’t move off its groove. The batsman was on one at that stage and he went on to score 56 runs off 84 balls with five boundaries. In the 25th over, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal got the 32-year-old’s number.

After the incident, Aaron Finch, the Aussie skipper, fumed and called it ‘unfair’. Indian captain Virat Kohli also expressed displeasure over the matter and was clear cut in saying that such things shouldn’t take place at the highest level.

I am sure no team would like seeing stuff

“Definitely. I mean, this is not something which you expect at the international level. I think with the technology it’s great. The lights come on and you know it’s very precise when you actually make something happen with the stumps. But you literally have to smash the stumps really hard, and I’m saying that as a batsman,” Virat was quoted as saying in the post-match press conference.

“I am sure no team would like seeing stuff like that when you actually bowl a good ball and then you don’t get the guy out. The ball hits the stump and the lights don’t come on, or the lights come on and the bail comes back on to the stump. I haven’t seen that happen so many times in the past,” he added.

As far as the game is concerned, India won comprehensively by 36 runs. Shikhar Dhawan’s century backed by decent knocks from Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni helped the Men in Blue post 352 in their 50 overs. Thereafter, Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up three wickets each to bowl their opponent out for 316.
