World T20 2016: South Africa Player Ratings

It was on the back of “one or two mistakes” against England and West Indies that South Africa’s World T20 campaign turned sour, said Faf du Plessis after his team had secured victory over Sri Lanka in a dead rubber in Delhi. South Africa failed to defend 229 against England, then scored only 122 for 8 against West Indies, despite having come to the World T20 as one of the favourites. The Proteas finished third in Group 1, ahead of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, thereby being knocked out of the competition. Here are the South African player ratings for their performances throughout the World T20. Hashim Amla – 7/10: Hashim Amla. (Photo by Jan Kruger-IDI/IDI via Getty Images) The classy right-hander made 58 off just 31 balls in the team’s opening encounter against England and looked in sublime touch. He hammered 7 fours and 3 sixes to give his team a flying start in a high-scoring thriller. He was unfortunate to be run out for 1 in a crucial encounter against the Windies. He made 5 against the Afghans, however, showed his elegance again in a knock of 56 off 52 balls against Sri Lanka. Quinton de Kock – 8/10: South African batsman Quinton de Kock. (Photo by GIANLUIGI GUERCIA/AFP/Getty Images) The left-hander made 52 off just 24 balls including 7 fours and 3 sixes against England in an enthralling opening partnership with Amla. He took a catch and effected a stumping in the same match. Against Afghans in the next match, he spanked 45 off 31 balls and followed it up with a 47 off 46 in a low-scoring thriller against West Indies. The only time he missed out was against the Lankans when he scored just 9. His wicket-keeping was brilliant throughout the competition. AB de Villiers – 3.5/10: AB de Villiers. His only substantial contribution came in a winning cause against the Afghans when he hammered 64 off 29 balls including 5 sixes. Other scores of 16, 10 in two important matches against England and Windies respectively didn’t do justice to his potential. A 20 not out against Sri Lanka ended his team’s tournament on a winning note. Faf du Plessis – 3.5/10: South African batsman Faf du Plessis. His team let him down in crunch situations while with the bat he failed to deliver on such occasions. He made 17 against England, 41 against Afghanistan, 9 against Windies and 31 against Sri Lanka in the inconsequential match. His run-a-ball effort was the slowest amongst all South African batsmen against England in a match that witnessed the latter overhaul a humongous target of 230 runs. JP Duminy – 7/10: (Photo Source: BCCI) The backbone of South African middle order, Duminy was badly missed by the team in the crucial match against West Indies. He started the competition with a spectacular 54 not out off 28 balls against England striking 3 fours and an equal number of sixes. He made an unbeaten 29 against Afghanistan, however, missed the next two games due to injury. His bowling would have been very handy on a turning track in Nagpur against the Windies in what was a must-win match for his team. David Miller – 5/10: South African batsman David Miller. (Photo by ANESH DEBIKY/AFP/Getty Images) The big-hitting Miller made an unbeaten 28 off just 12 balls against England and took his team to an imposing total. He spanked 2 fours and an equal number of sixes. He made 19 off 8 against the Afghans, however, failed against the Windies in his final innings in the tourney scoring just 1. He fielded well and took some fine outfield catches. Chris Morris – 5.5/10: South African batsman Chris Morris. (Photo by RODGER BOSCH/AFP/Getty Images) The all-rounder started the tourney on an expensive note conceding 39 off his 3 wicket-over overs against England. He came back strongly in the next match against the Afghans and won the player of the match award with a spell of 4/27. His unbeaten 16 off 17 took the Proteas to a challenging total against the Windies. His spell in this defeat was 1/32 off 4 fours. He was benched in the dead rubber against Sri Lanka. David Wiese – 4/10: South Africa cricketer David Wiese. (Photo by MUNIR UZ ZAMAN/AFP/Getty Images) The all-rounder played his first game of the competition against Afghanistan and had a poor outing. His team won the match however he was hammered for 47 runs in his wicket-less 4 overs. He came back strongly and 28 off 26 against the Windies and bowled 4 overs for just 19 runs taking one wicket. He bowled just one over for 8 runs against Sri Lanka and didn’t get to bat. Kyle Abbott – 6/10: (Photo Source: Twitter) The pacer, like most bowlers, went for runs against England, however, took 3 wickets that kept his team in the match. He gave 41 runs in 3.4 overs and his wickets included that of the English openers. His 2/36 against the Afghans and 2/14 against Sri Lanka were two good spells. He was benched in the game against the Windies. Dale Steyn – 2/10: Dale Steyn of South Africa. (Photo by Graham Crouch-IDI/IDI via Getty Images) One of the modern day greats, Dale Steyn could have possibly made his last appearance in coloured clothing for South Africa in this tournament. The fast bowler had a poor outing against England and conceded 35 runs off his wicket-less 2 overs. He was dropped for the next 2 games and played against Sri Lanka delivering a 4-over spell of 1/33. Kagiso Rabada – 3/10: Kagiso Rabada. (Photo Source: AFP) The talented youngster is one of the best fast bowlers in world cricket, however, failed to keep the pressure on the opposition batsmen when it mattered the most. His 2/50 against England was a wayward spell followed by 2/37 against the Afghans. He leaked runs at a crucial juncture against the Windies and failed to 9 off the final over when the pressure was on the opposition being 7 down. He finished with 1/38 off 3.4 overs in this match. He was benched in his team’s final game. Imran Tahir – 8/10: South African bowler Imran Tahir. (Photo by ANESH DEBIKY/AFP/Getty Images) The leg-spinner proved his class again in the shortest format. His 1/28 in 4 overs against was an exceptional spell on a belter at Wankhede. He followed it up with 2/24 against the Afghans at the same venue. At Nagpur his 2/13 against the Windies turned a one-sided contest into a thrilling one. He finished with a spell of 1/18 against Sri Lanka. Aaron Phangiso – 7/10: Aaron Phangiso. (Photo Source: AFP) The arm-spinner did well in the two opportunities he got. He played his first against the Windies and bowled a 4-over spell of 1/19. His 2/26 off 4 overs against Sri Lanka got South Africa back in the match and won him the player of the match. With his action having been under scrutiny prior to the World T20, he did very well to execute his skills under pressure. Farhaan Behardien – 6/10: Farhaan Behardien. (Photo Source: Associated Press) Behardien got to play just one match, however, didn’t get to showcase his skills with the bat. He did well with the ball in his spell of 2/15 against Sri Lanka that included the huge wicket of the team’s top scorer Dilshan. Behardien has been a regular member of the ODI side however stiff competition for places in the shortest version kept him out. Rilee Rossouw – 2.5/10: Rossouw likely to be penalized for Tamim shoulder barge. (© Getty Images) The left-hander scored a duck in his only match against the Windies. He effected an important run out; that of the in-form Andre Fletcher in the low scoring match.
