The race to the finale for the 2023-25 cycle of the World Test Championship has become extremely intriguing, and a lot of tables have turned, especially after India's comprehensive win against Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and South Africa getting past Sri Lanka in the first game of their series. Currently sitting at the top, India have secured 110 points to their name after 15 matches with nine wins. The 295-run trouncing of the Aussies has bolstered India's chances for the top spot.
On number two are South Africa. The Temba Bavuma-led side have currently played nine matches in the ongoing cycle, winning five of those, including three losses and a draw, taking their points' percentage (PCT) to 59.26. They have a home series lined up against Pakistan which spans December and January.
The thumping loss in Perth has displaced Australia from the second position on the table. All is not lost for them, though, and the hosts would be keen on making amends and putting on a much-improved showing in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, which is slated to be a Pink Ball affair.
New Zealand, who were riding the high wave after handing a resounding series defeat to India in India, now face an incredibly challenging task at the moment. With England having handed a loss in the first game of the three-match series, the chances of ending up in the top two spots have become next to nothing.
Sri Lanka’s loss in the first Test against the Proteas meant that they need to win all their remaining Tests – one against South Africa and two at home against Australia. They have won five games and lost as many in the current cycle.
Meanwhile, England, who have played the most games out of all the nine nations in the present cycle (20), earned a consolation victory against New Zealand away. Even if they whitewash the Kiwis, they have no chance of landing a top-two finish.
The hope for Pakistan, the West Indies, and Bangladesh is all but lost, and even a miracle can't save them. After having incurred a heavy defeat at the hands of Bangladesh, the Pakistani side came back brilliantly well against England to win the three-match series by a 2-1 margin.
Speaking of the West Indies, their only couple of wins this cycle came against Australia during the historic Test at the Gabba and against Bangladesh in the recently-concluded first Test against Bangladesh. The Bangla Tigers slipped to the bottom position after losing to South Africa at home, but came a spot up after their recent win against the Caribbeans. After a loss in Kingston, Jamaica, Windies are now at the bottom with a PCT of 24.24.
