'Would love to do it' - David Warner on idea of leading one of the two new franchises in IPL 2022
David Warner feels captaining the side brings the additional responsibility of doing well.
Former Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner has said he is willing to lead either one of the two new teams in next year’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warner had a season to forget in the ongoing IPL as he scored only 195 runs in the eight matches that he played for the team. Worst, the southpaw had also been sacked mid-way as the leader of SRH. Later, he shared an emotional post on his official Instagram account signaling the end of his eventful journey with the franchise.
With BCCI set to announce two news teams on October 25, Warner is open to leading the side, if an opportunity presents itself. Apart from being a destructive opening batter, the 34-year-old is also a good leader. His record for SRH as captain is stupendous and the franchises might look to have an experienced batter and leader in the form of Warner.
“Yeah, two new teams are coming up next year. Obviously, those franchises have been released yet. Would I like to captain it if it comes up? It is definitely something that I enjoy doing, it makes me play a lot better as well with that responsibility,” Warner told Sports Today.
Warner further opined that having the previous exposure of leading an IPL is a great advantage. He also said that while being in the SRh, guys like Kane Williamson, Jason Holder, and Rashid Khan also chipped in with their valuables inputs and information. “Having a taste of it in this environment makes it easier. I shared that role with Kane a fair bit and so it is great to have other leaders in the franchise. Jason Holder was another guy, Rashid Khan who captained Afghanistan. These are people with whom you can share your knowledge and rebound a lot of information.
“I would be thrilled to do that if something like that came up. But it’s all about getting a solid foundation together and whoever they feel is the best leader will get the nod.”
I feel a person of my character can get people up and about: David Warner
Warner concluded by saying that he is passionate about leading the side and his energetic attitude will complement the team nicely. The southpaw displayed these very attributes when he was in charge of SRH, and helped the team to be ruthless.
“If captaincy arises, I would love to do it. It’s something that I am passionate about. I feel a person of my character can get people up and about. I am very energetic, I call a spade a spade and love trying to get the best out of everyone to perform at their best and hold everyone accountable for their actions too,” he added.
