'Would've been great for fans' - Wasim Jaffer feels India-England-South Africa should have played tri-series instead of bilaterals

England and India are currently engaged in a three-match ODI series in England. Both teams played the rescheduled fifth Test match at the start of this month. India then beat the hosts 2-1 in the three-match T20I series before bashing them in the first ODI by 10 wickets. England will next play South Africa in a three-match ODI and three-match T20I series starting July 19.

South Africa played a five-match T20I series against India last month and had a rather big gap of a month before the first international match of the England tour. Meanwhile, former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer believes that all three nations should have played a tri-series in England. He reckons that fans are also in favour of tri-series more, which have been rare occasions lately.

“SA are in England. Their ODI series starts on 19th July. England v India ODI series finishes on 17th July. I think this could have been a really good Tri Series. Would have been great for the fans as well. Tri-series > Bilaterals,” Wasim Jaffer tweeted. India and England were involved in a tri-series in Australia in 2015.

Wasim Jaffer and Michael Vaughan were involved in another friendly banter

India won the first ODI match at the Oval by 10 wickets on Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead. Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami dominated the strong English lineup from the start and bowled out the hosts on just 110 runs. India opener Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan remained unbeaten and chased the target in just 18.4 overs.

England welcomed Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, and Ben Stokes, who all missed the T20I series, in their starting eleven for the first match. But Root and Stokes were bowled out for ducks by Bumrah and Shami, respectively. Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone also failed to open their accounts at the Oval to make it four ducks for England.

Jaffer was quick to reply to former English skipper Michael Vaughan‘s tweet in a hilarious way. Fans always enjoy the friendly banter between these former star batters as they regularly take a dig at each other when India and England face each other.
