After a successful inaugural season, the second season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) is expected to hit the ball out of the park again. Mumbai Indians, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, defeated Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in the summit clash to become the first-ever champions of the WPL.
Five teams played in the inaugural season – Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Giants. It is important to note that no new team has been added to the league for the second season.The auction for the second season of the WPL will take place in Mumbai on Saturday, December 9. An additional purse of INR 1.5 crore will be available to all the participating teams. Thirty slots, including nine overseas, will be filled at the auction. A total of 60 players have been retained, of which 21 are overseas cricketers. On the other hand, 29 players were released.The Gujarat Giants, who finished last on the points table in 2023, have the highest purse of INR 5.95 crore while the UP Warriorz have INR 4 crore left in their purse. Bangalore have INR 3.35 crore left while Delhi have INR 2.25 in their kitty. Defending champions Mumbai have the smallest purse left, with INR 2.1 crore.After releasing half of their squad, Gujarat will have to fill 10 slots, including three overseas players. UP and Mumbai have to fill up five slots each, including one overseas player. Bangalore will need to pick seven players, of which three have to be overseas. Delhi have to fill three slots, including one overseas.
