Wriddhiman Saha dedicates his century to IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman

India Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha has dedicated his stunning century for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Wednesday to Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. Abhinandan was caught by Pakistan on Wednesday when Pakistani Air Force struck down two Indian jets as tension between the two countries have further escalated in the wake of the Pulwama attack.

The entire country is praying for the Air Force officer after a video started circulating, showing Abhinandan being beaten by the Pakistani mob before being taken away by the army. Later another video emerged of the brave soldier, showing him drinking tea with Pakistani officials and telling the camera that he was being well treated. The whole country is now desperately seeking to see Abhinandan return to the country safe and sound.

And while the country awaits the return of its brave son, Saha came up with a heartwarming gesture for him. The Bengal star scored a swashbuckling century against Arunachal Pradesh. Saha, who has battled injuries in the past one year or so, made a smashing comeback with a 129-run knock as Bengal smashed Arunachal by 107 runs. And as soon as the game finished, Saha took to Twitter to dedicate the knock to Abhinandan, writing:

“Thank You everyone for your wishes for my today’s knock. This innings is very special to me and I dedicate this inning to India’s brave son AIF Wing Commander Abhinandan. I pray that he returns to India, safe. Jai Hind,” his tweet read.

Pant not my competition

Wriddhiman Saha, meanwhile, will be hoping his latest ton helps him make a return to the Test team where Rishabh Pant has all but sealed the spot in the playing eleven after scoring centuries in England and Australia. Saha has not played for India since the tour of South Africa last year. He, however, recently insisted that he does not see Pant as a competition.

“Rishabh got his chance when I was out and just like anyone would look to grab their chance with both hands he did the same. I don’t look at him as my competition, in fact when he came to the NCA we spent a lot of time together which was nice. We hardly spoke about performances and selection,” Saha was quoted as saying by CricketNext.
