Wriddhiman Saha eyeing comeback through India A matches

Wriddhiman Saha, the veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, last donned the national colours during India’s tour of South Africa last year. Thereafter, he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL). The 34-year-old has now been out of cricket for a staggering eight months owing to a shoulder injury. He also underwent a shoulder surgery last year.

However, the Shaktigarh-born showed his eagerness to make a return to the cricket pitch and he’s planning to do the same in India A’s upcoming two-match unofficial Test series against England Lions. The Indian squad for the series hasn’t been announced yet. Moreover, he also mentioned that he would be able to attain fitness for the upcoming edition of the prestigious IPL.

“It will be great if I could be fit to play in the India A day-games against England Lions [starting February 7]. If the fitness is up to the mark, then only I will be available. I am almost there. I will definitely be fit for IPL but my immediate target is to be fit for the India A games.

I can only play when there is not even one per cent doubt. The physio will be able to tell better. If I am fit, I will be going there only. I am also looking at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 for Bengal,” Saha was quoted as saying in Sportstar.

Saha took over as the full-time keeper following MS Dhoni’s retirement after the third Test of the series Down Under back in 2014-15. Saha said that being a wicketkeeper, he needs to put in the extra yards in order to stay fit.

“If I wasn’t a wicketkeeper, I would have probably been fit 45 days ago. I think that’s a difference between a batsman and a ‘keeper. You always need to be ready for those dives when needed. If you aren’t match ready, you will be found out and later on, that isn’t a good feeling for a player,” he added.

All this while during Saha’s absence, India have had two wicketkeepers in Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant. The former couldn’t show consistency with the willow, but the 21-year-old Pant grabbed the opportunity with both hands after making his debut in the Nottingham Test against England.
