Wriddhiman Saha hopes to get match-fit soon and be back in contention
Saha has been out of action since the South Africa tour this year.
Since MS Dhoni‘s retirement from Test cricket in 2014, the Indian team has tried a lot of players for the important wicketkeeper-batsman slot. Bengal’s Wriddhiman Saha leapfrogged all the others to cement his place in the Test team in the past few years. Saha has played 32 Tests in which he has scored 1164 runs at a decent average of 30.63, which also includes three centuries and five fifties and was also touted by many of the experts as the best wicketkeeper in India in the longest format of the game.
However, he has been out of contention for a while now after sustaining a shoulder injury during the first Test match against South Africa earlier this year. In an interview, Saha mentioned that his fitness has been improving by every day. He estimates that he will be taking a call about his match-fitness only by mid or late December. He also has been getting appreciable support from his state team, Bengal who are keeping a tab on his fitness status.
Fitness is improving by the day
“My fitness is improving by the day. About my expected return, it will probably be towards the end of December. But ultimately, there is the difference between ‘expected return’ and being match-fit. I will be sure about that only in mid or probably late December. They call me to enquire about my fitness status. They also keep telling me about the matches they won, and the ones they lost,” said Saha in an exclusive interview with Timesnownews.com.
Saha stated that injuries are a part of a sportsman’s life, which is why he does not have any major regrets. He mentioned that his current aim is only to make a comeback into the national team after a quick recovery from injury. He also talked about his routine during recovery from the injury in the rehab.
“My only aim has been to recover fast and make a comeback to the game. In rehab, the system is designed to get you stronger and healthier day-by-day. You are given a different set of exercises, the patterns change. Then you do the strength-building exercises. Finally, you enter cricketing activities. That is what I am currently following. Apart from that, I am into strength work, running, etc,” the 34-year-old added.
