India’s Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who incurred an injury to his thumb while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League Qualifier 2 against Kolkata Knight Riders is all set to undergo surgery. It was initially believed that the thumb injury kept him out of the historic Afghanistan Test and the upcoming England Test series as well.
In a recent development, it was revealed that Saha is suffering from a major shoulder injury. The 33-year-old will undergo surgery for a posterosuperior labral tear on his right shoulder. He will also miss India’s tour of Australia later this year provided the surgery takes place.
The surgery is slated to be conducted at the end of July or early August in Manchester. As per discussions between Saha and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), his wife shall also accompany. Her visa application is in the process as the board is looking to get the player to travel to the UK at the earliest.
According to Cricbuzz, a source privy to the developments revealed, “The surgery will take place either at the end of this month or early next month, depending on when they finally arrive in England. It is too early to speak about his return and a call can only be taken after taking a look at his recovery speed. It could be anything between 6 to 8 months.”
Confusion surrounding the injury
Saha sustained the shoulder injury during the tour of South Africa earlier in the year but his rehabilitation process was completely goofed up. After being declared fit on March 19, Saha once again sustained shoulder injury on May 7 and was again given ultrasound injections in Delhi. He was rested for five IPL games. Between July 3 and 13, Saha’s shoulder injury “worsened” and the steroid injections didn’t help.
The aftermath will see Saha requiring a significant post-op rehabilitation time to recover fully, implying that the gloveman could be out of competitive cricket for a considerable amount of time. He could well be out of contention for a place in the squad for the tour to Australia at the end of the year as well.
