India Women’s team hasn’t had the best of years thus far. They lost the Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur after losing the final against Bangladesh by three wickets. Thereafter, their coach Tushar Arothe stepped down from his role following a feud with the players after which former Indian cricketer Romesh Powar was appointed as their interim coach. But even he had a rough time with the women’s team.

India recently played the Women’s World Cup in the West Indies and bowed out after slumping in the semi-final against Heather Knight’s England in Antigua by eight wickets. After the defeat, veteran batsman Mithali Raj and Powar were involved in a heated altercation and eventually the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) didn’t renew Powar’s contract, which expired on November 30.

Raman replaces Powar

In the meantime, it has been learned that former Indian cricketer WV Raman has been appointed their coach as per reports in Times of India (TOI). The BCCI called for applications and three of them in Raman, former Indian fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad and World Cup-winning coach and retired South African cricketer Gary Kirsten were shortlisted for the role, but eventually, Raman made the cut.

Raman currently works for the India U19 and India ‘A’ team along with Rahul Dravid and has done a reasonable job thus far. When Dravid works with one of the teams, Raman takes charge of the other team. Raman has also worked with Arjun Tendulkar, son of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. However, the task with the women’s team isn’t expected to be easy for him by any stretch of the imagination.

As far as Mithali and Powar’s souring relation is concerned, the former wrote a letter to the BCCI, expressing her grief and accusing Powar of showing disrespect towards her. Then, Powar wrote a letter to the board, mentioning that the cricketer kept her interests ahead of the team. Powar also got support from captain Harmanpreet Kaur and swashbuckling opening batswomen in Smriti Mandhana.
