A pace bowler with a whippy action and a lower-order right-handed batsman Vijay Kumar Yo Mahesh has announced his retirement from all formats of the game. Though the bowling all-rounder never got a chance to represent India at the big stage, he featured at U19 and India A level. He came through age-group cricket and was part of India’s U19 squad in the 2006 World Cup held in Sri Lanka.
Over the years, Mahesh had established himself as one of the bowling mainstays of Tamil Nadu in the domestic circuit having played 50 First-class matches amassing 1119 runs at an average of 26 along with scalping 108 wickets at an economy of 3.20 and 35.8. In addition, Yo Mahesh also featured in 60 List A and 46 T20 games scoring 326 and 96 runs and picking 91 and 52 wickets at an economy of 5.15 and 7.72 respectively.
As far as the Indian Premier League (IPL) is concerned, the 32-year-old was associated with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) playing 18 matches and picking up as many as 21 wickets at an economy rate of 8.83 and average of 23.76.
Yo Mahesh thanks BCCI and TNCA in his retirement note
Vijay Kumar Yo Mahesh bid adieu to the gentleman’s game with a long note posted on his official Twitter handle. Yo Mahesh’s career was massively plagued by injuries from the past few years but he never let such challenges demotivate him and always made a strong comeback in the game.
In his final note, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder wrote, “I would like to announce my retirement from all the formats of the game. What do I feel about it? Immense gratitude for this sport that has given me everything and made me the individual that I am today. 20 years is a long time, and while I would have loved to play more, sometimes you just know its time.”
Further, Mahesh expressed his gratitude towards the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), his coaches, academy, physio, teammates and other people involved for giving him opportunities and a platform to play the game he loved with all his heart.
The 32-year-old signed off with immense pride, gratitude and honour and took a moment to thank his father, mother, wife, children and sister for their constant support and love.
