The odds were, well and truly, against India ahead of the 1983 World Cup final against the two-time champions West Indies. After the first innings when Kapil Dev and Co were bundled out for 183, Clive Lloyd’s Caribbeans seemed to have the upper hand at the Lord’s. But India showed great resilience and bowled the opposition out for 140, thereby winning the match by 43 runs.

It changed the face of Indian cricket to a great extent and 28 years later MS Dhoni’s Men in Blue would go on to repeat the heroics. It was exactly 37 years ago when Kapil’s men pulled off the heist. Yuvraj Singh, the member of the 2011 World Cup-winning team, didn’t forget to laud the 1983 team for their stupendous show at the Home of Cricket, defying all the odds.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “A moment of national pride, our seniors lifted the 1983 Cricket World Cup on this day Congratulations to every member of the 1983 team. You set the benchmark for us to achieve the same in 2011! Looking forward to India becoming a world champion in all sports.”

In the meantime, Shastri had a hilarious reply for Yuvraj. He asked Yuvraj to tag him and Kapil Dev. Shastri replied and wrote, “Thanks, Junior! You can tag me and Kaps also @therealkapildev.”

Reverting to Shastri’s tweet, Yuvraj lauded both the Indian coach and the World Cup-winning skipper. Yuvraj replied and wrote, “Hahahahaha senior ! Your a legend on and off the field. Kapil Paaji was a different league altogether.”

From the personal viewpoint, Shastri didn’t have the greatest of outings in the World Cup. In five matches, he managed 40 runs and could only pick four wickets. On the other hand, Kapil led from the front. He churned out 303 runs at an average of 60.60, striking at an incredible 108.99.

He also notched an unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe, rescuing India out of jail. With the ball in hand, he picked up 12 wickets at an economy of 2.91 with a five-wicket haul to show for his efforts. He has turned out to be an inspiration for many.
