Team India’s ability to defend the total has come under severe scrutiny after Australia chased down 359 runs in Mohali a couple of days ago. This was a dent in their confidence ahead of the World Cup even as the team is left with only one match to go before the mega event. The bowling attack was being lauded for their performances a few days ago but now is being criticised after the fourth ODI.
However, the former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan has urged the fans to be patient with the team. India went in with four changes after the third game in a bid to try out different combinations and also test the bench strength before the World Cup. They rested MS Dhoni and replaced him with Rishabh Pant while also brought back Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal for Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja respectively.
Murali pointed out the same and mentioned that the Men in Blue are experimenting to zero in on the World Cup squad and such games are bound to come by during this period.
Not everyone can be a match-winner
“You have to be patient with the team. The Indian team has been doing really well and are trying to experiment with the World Cup around the corner. You will get failures on the road to success as there cannot be 11 Virat Kohlis in the team. Not everyone can be a match-winner.
“You will win some games and you will also lose a few. Otherwise, every team must be filled with 11 Kohli-s or Sachin Tendulkar-s or Don Bradman-s. But that cannot happen,” he was quoted as saying by India TV. The Sri Lankan spin wizard also added that the fans will have a role to play if India are to win the World Cup in England later this year.
“The fans have to be patient. The Indian players have done well and you cannot put too much pressure on them. This is a sport and there will be winners and losers. It is important to keep the pressure off the players as they must be allowed to focus on the game and that will bring the desired results,” Murali further said.
