You might see someone score 400 in ODI cricket: Kapil Dev
"Why only triple hundred, someday, you might see someone score 400 in ODI cricket because players have changed gears to suit the format," he quoted.
Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev was recently spotted in Udaipur motivating young cricketers. He was in the city to promote Wonder Cement Saath7 Cricket Mahotsav Season 2 finale, which saw players from three states – Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh – participate in the tournament. On the sidelines of the event, the former Indian captain spoke at length about the various aspects of the modern day game.
He congratulated the organizers for having organised an event of such large scale where over 50000 cricketers participated. Analysing the changing dimensions of the modern day game, Kapil Dev noted that the biggest change has been in the mindset. He rightly mentioned that scoring a century of 35 balls was an unheard proposition a couple of decades ago. And now, it is a regularity in T20 tournaments.
“The biggest change today is in the mindset of the cricketers. Scoring a hundred off 35 balls was unheard of back in the day. Indian cricket commands respect from all quarters and the quality reflects the results – that’s a big positive,” quoted Kapil Dev.
Triple ton? Why not!
When asked if a batsman could score a triple century in ODI cricket, Kapil Dev questioned back asking why not. Recently, Rohit Sharma had scored his third double ton in the ODI cricket. Speaking on this note, Kapil remarked that things will not be restricted to just a triple ton, some day, a batsman could also score 400 in ODIs.
“Why not? Why only triple hundred, someday, you might see someone score 400 in ODI cricket because players have changed gears to suit the format. In the 1980s, teams used to make 280 at the end of day’s play and today, they’re racking up those runs in just 20 overs,” said Kapil.
On Virat Kohli and the comparisons
Lastly, the former Indian captain spoke about the comparisons that are being made between Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli has been raking up tons at will in the recent times. Kapil feels that the next generation players are always expected to be better than their predecessors.
“Look, you can’t compare the players. You can’t say one is better than the other or vice-versa. If the next generation of stars isn’t better than its predecessors, then the game won’t move forward,” conceded the World Cup winning Indian captain.
