Virat Kohli is back for a two-ball duck in the third and final ODI against West Indies. The former Indian skipper is certainly enduring a rough patch as the wait for his 71st international century continues. Having scored eight and 18 in the first two ODIs, Kohli was expected to play a substantial knock in the last ODI with India already sealing the series 2-0.
However, nothing as such happened as the 33-year-old could only survive a couple of balls. Kohli came out to bat in the fourth over after skipper Rohit Sharma fell prey to Alzarri Joseph for 13. Kohli left the first delivery he faced, which was outside the off-stump. The talismanic batter then received a delivery at his pads and he wanted to get some runs at the third man region.
Second duck for Virat Kohli in last five ODI innings
However, he was only able to edge the ball and wicketkeeper Shai Hope took a fine catch. While the West Indies camp was ecstatic, Kohli was evidently dejected while walking back to the hut. This is now Kohli’s second duck in the last five ODI innings and his fans are worried about the same. Needless to mention, Twitterati went berserk right after Kohli’s early departure.
While many expressed disappointment, the meme fest was also ignited. Kohli’s numbers have significantly dipped down in the last couple of years. He hasn’t scored an international century since November 2019 and many fans and experts are waiting for the drought to get over.
The last few months have also been about controversies in Indian cricket. Kohli, who stepped down as India’s T20I captain post the T20 World Cup 2021, was shockingly sacked as ODI skipper in December last year. What followed was contradicting statements from Kohli and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.
Furthermore, Kohli even stepped down as Test skipper post India’s 2-1 defeat against South Africa last month. Hence, the 33-year-old now plays purely as a batter across formats. He did fairly well in the preceding ODI series against South Africa, scoring two fifties in three games. However, the Delhi-born batter didn’t look anyway near his best. As the West Indies series proved to be a disaster for Kohli, fans are worried.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Virat Kohli’s early exit:
