Younis Khan was wrongly made batting coach: Shoaib Akhtar

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has questioned Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to appoint Younis Khan as the batting coach for England tour. The explicit Akhtar also said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is not managed well.

Expressing his anguish of the appointment, Shoaib Akhtar insisted that the legendary Pakistan batsman would have been better off had he been appointed to work at the National Cricket Academy. He added that Mohammad Yousuf should have been given the coaching role in the national team.

“Younis Khan has wrongly been made batting coach, he should be training players in the National Academy with Mohammad Yousuf as the Pakistan batting coach,” Akhtar told to a local news channel.

The role of batting coach is Younis Khan’s first stint with the PCB since his retirement in 2017. The board was curious to rope him into work at the development level at the National Cricket Academy but it did not work out. PCB was also planning to involve Younis Khan in the country’s Under-19 coaching set-up but that did not materialize either.

Akhtar, who is famously known as the Rawalpindi Express for his express pace also said that PCB is not managed well. Additionally, he expressed his desire of working for the cricket board while also stating that he would offer his services for free.

“PCB is mismanaged. The more you keep good people away, the further cricket will go downhill. If I got a chance to work in PCB, I’d bring in foreign investment. I would work for free and ensure that no one calls me up and tells me to select their kid.”

Younis Khan is one of Pakistan’s most decorated batsmen. While there are no questions raised against his batting credentials having scored 10,099 runs at a stellar average of over 52 in 118 Tests, We will have to wait and see how he fares as a batting coach. He is the only batsman with the distinction of making Test hundreds in 11 countries.

Younis Khan is now accompanying the Pakistan Cricket team in England as they gear up for the Test series that is scheduled to kick off on August 5 at Manchester.
