'You've always got to look out for your family first' - David Warner likely to consider his future international career

COVID-19 pandemic has changed a lot of things. Though cricket is set to return, it won’t be easy as it was before. Players will be in the bio-bubble all the time irrespective of where they are playing. They won’t be able to take their family on tours and it means they will be away from their loved ones for a long time. Australia cricketer David Warner is aware of all these restrictions post international cricket’s resumption and is weighing up a decision on his future.

International cricket resumed after a break of 117 days earlier this month with England and West Indies being involved in a Test series. But the teams like Australia and India among others are yet to take the field and it is set to be a tight schedule for them. With the IPL set to be played from September 19 to November 8, Australian players including David Warner will not have any time to rest after their limited-overs tour to England.

Soon after returning from the IPL, they will have to face Afghanistan and then India in the home Test series. All this time, they will have to be away from their families due to COVID-19 guidelines. Warner understands it is not going to be easy especially for him to be away from family for a long time and has hinted that he will reconsider his future keeping the family members in mind.

“Obviously three daughters and my wife, who I owe a lot to, has been a big part of my playing career. You’ve always got to look out for your family first, and with cricket and these unprecedented times, you’ve got to weigh up these decisions,” he said while speaking to The Australian.

Earlier, David Warner had indicated that he might hang his boots from T20I format after the 2021 World Cup in India. But with the 2020 T20 mega event being postponed now, the ICC events are lined up in 2021 and 2022 with the 50-over World Cup to be played in 2023. Speaking about the same, the southpaw has admitted that he will have to think about playing the event in India itself.

“Look, at the moment, I’ll keep continuing to aim for that. Obviously the T20 (World Cup) is not here at home, which would have been ideal to play that and win that here. Now that gets pushed back. I will have to have a rethink about that when it comes to India.

“I’ll see where I am and where the girls are at with school as well. A lot of that is a big part of my decision. It’s not just when the games are being played and how much cricket’s being played. It’s a big family decision for myself,” Warner further added.
