‘You've got to be smart with what you do’ says David Warner
‘You’ve got to be smart with what you do’ says David Warner: Ashes has always been about a lot more than just the on-field game, it’s been a thing that tests the mental strengths, pressure, provocation; action deliver reactions. Words fly around as much as the ball and it has been almost a tradition; the team that dominates with the score line also intensifies its sledges over the other team. Australia is just ready to begin their Ashes 2015 defense against England in England, and it’s not just cricket that is making news.
Australian opener David Warner has always been vocal about his love for sledging, and why a stricter code should not be imposed on the game. Warner was today quoted by cricket.com.au saying, “I’m on my last warning from the ICC. These rules are being clamped down now, they’re really honing in on players celebrating wickets and obviously a bit of banter on the field. If you walk towards a player the umpires are going to fine you, you’ve got to be smart with what you do,”
He has been hit hard by the ICCs policy to keep cricket clean and maintain the Gentleman’s game stature with cracking down heavily on slightest code of conduct violations. Warner has been fined twice in the last 18 months; once against South Africa and then against India. But that does not stop him and his inclination for the verbal exchanges.
“But … you want to see that banter out there. You want the play-and-miss, and the bowler comes down the wicket and gives you a stare. I feel that sometimes it could be taking away from the viewers, that the viewers love that. You know that when you get out there the crowd gets into it, they enjoy that stuff,” he said.
The dashing opener said he feels that the situations and exchanges have more often been misread; misinterpreted and misrepresented by the media and that is what makes it look graver than what it actually was. Warner also added, “I think everyone that is sitting behind the TV screens has to realise that it’s not serious. There are no threats or anything out there … it’s about producing entertainment for people that are at home watching,”
