Day 2 of the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston between hosts England and visitors India witnessed a world record being created as skipper Jasprit Bumrah went bonkers during one of Stuart Broad’s over. Bumrah went absolutely berserk as Broad delivered the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket, conceding 35 runs.
Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj were the last men standing on the crease, as England required just one wicket to put a stop on India’s innings. The first ball was a short delivery on the middle and leg stump as Bumrah whacked it and earned four runs. The second delivery was a short bouncer as it traveled from over Bumrah’s head and even missed Sam Billings’ gloves to travel for a four. It was declared a wide and five runs were added to India’s tally.
The subsequent ball was declared a no-ball and Bmrah hit it for an amazing six. Broad continued to throw short balls and Bumrah utilized the opportunity to hit it over the third-man fence and send it across the boundary line. The no-ball gave another bonus ball for Bumrah as Broad seemed frustrated.
With the short-ball strategy not working, Broad attempted to throw a full-toss, but Bumrah was unstoppable as he hit even that and the ball traveled for four. He followed it with two more fours to make it three in a row as Broad was left speechless.
Jasprit Bumrah channelised inner Yuvraj Singh at Edgbaston
With a sense of disappointment, Broad delivered the penultimate ball which was short of the length at the leg stump. Bumrah did not think for a minute and continued to capitalize on his energy as he smacked the Englishman for a massive six. He took a single off the final delivery to take the total to 35 runs off that over. Notably, Broad has been at the receiving end of such assault before as former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh smashed him for 36 runs in an over during the 2007 T20 World Cup. The southpaw smashed six sixes in that over as Broad couldn’t do much.
A pacer walking into bat, thinking nothing besides hitting to take the team’s scoreboard past 400 runs, it surely turned out to be a memorable outing for Bumrah who was standing in his captaincy debut. Bumrah played the captain’s knock at the end before his partner Mohammad Siraj was dismissed by James Anderson as the English pacer bagged his five-wicket haul.
From facing a batting collapse on the first day and struggling at 71/4 to ending the innings on a high note with a huge total of 416 runs, Indian batters blew everyone’s mind.
