Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has gone on to laud the selection of 35-year old all-rounder Yuvraj Singh in the side. The southpaw has been one of the iconic figures of Indian cricket for the most part given his impressive performances in the 2011 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. However, a successful battle against cancer, as well as a dip in both his form and fitness, ensured that he subsequently lost his place in the Indian side.
Gavaskar, who has also won the World Cup with India in the past went on to state that he was certainly pleased by the fact that Yuvraj has been given yet another opportunity with the Indian side, something that was certainly not expected. Following a poor performance in the World T20, Yuvraj was dropped from the side following which many speculated that it was the conclusion of his international career.
Speaking to the NDTV on Friday, Gavaskar went on to state that Yuvraj had been given somewhat of a belated wedding gift of sorts. “Yuvraj deserves every opportunity to make a comeback. BCCI gave him a slightly belated wedding gift,” Gavaskar told NDTV on Friday.
In spite of the fact that age has caught up with him, Gavaskar still believes that the southpaw is an outstanding fielder in the grand scheme of things. “He might not be as brilliant as he was when 21 years old but he is still an outstanding fielder,” Gavaskar added.
The current Indian commentator went on to add that the selection of Rishabh Pant was also something that is a step in the right direction as far as the Indian cricket team is concerned. “Keeping Pant on the side is a recognition of his performances in the domestic circuit,” Gavaskar said.
