Yuvraj Singh, the former Indian batsman, has named Muttiah Muralitharan as one of the toughest bowlers he has faced in his career. The southpaw said that he didn’t have much clue while facing the legendary Sri Lankan off-spinner. In Test cricket, the tweaker got rid of Yuvraj four times in six matches, the joint most along with Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Sami.

In ODIs, Murali managed to get rid of Singh five times in 37 matches. However, in the 50-over format, Yuvraj had an average of 41.20 against the Lankan offie. Yuvraj also put forth Australian speedster Glenn McGrath’s name and said that his out-swingers troubled him a lot. McGrath got rid of Yuvraj twice in as many Test matches.

Sachin asked me to start sweeping: Yuvraj Singh

“I really struggled against (Muttiah) Muralitharan. Had no clue against him. Glenn (McGrath) would trouble me a lot with the away-going delivery. Luckily I didn’t play much against McGrath because in Test matches I was sitting out and cheering for the seniors,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying in Sportstar.

Yuvraj found Sachin Tendulkar’s suggestion to face Murali pretty useful. The Master Blaster asked the Punjab cricketer to play the sweep and that had worked wonders for Yuvraj. “Sachin (Tendulkar) told me to start sweeping (against Muralitharan) and I was at ease,” Yuvraj added.

Yuvraj made his debut in the 2000 Champions Trophy under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, the current BCCI president. He didn’t look back and went on to play the 2007 and 2011 World Cup. In the latter, he also became the Player of the Tournament where India won the title after 28 years.

He was also a part of India’s victory run in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa back in 2007. During the mega event, Yuvraj smashed Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over, Moreover, he scored the fastest T20I fifty off a mere 12 balls, a record that still remains unscathed.

Last year, he hung his boots from international cricket and has been playing franchise T20 cricket around the globe. He has taken part in the Abu Dhabi T10 league and the Global T20 Canada.
