Yuvraj Singh says MS Dhoni is the only one to take a call on his retirement
It's unlikely that Dhoni would be making a comeback on the cricket field this year.
MS Dhoni has been a polarizing figure in the Indian cricket scene right from his debut in 2004 to the current scenario when he has taken an extended break from international cricket. He was last seen in India colors during the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019, where he scored a fifty, but couldn’t help his team from being eliminated from the tournament. Dhoni has since missed the tour of West Indies and the home T20I series against South Africa.
With him being out on a break till November, he is set to miss the home series against Bangladesh as well. This bodes well for Rishabh Pant, who is currently struggling with his batting in the limited-overs formats and has the fans and experts losing patience and faith in him. However, with Dhoni’s extended leaves, rumors of him calling time on his career have become stronger than ever.
Yuvraj Singh says speculation on MSD’s retirement is unfair
Dhoni’s former India teammate and friend, Yuvraj Singh has, however, called the speculations on the former India captain’s retirement as unfair. “I think that’s the call he needs to take. He has been a great player and Captain for the Indian team. He has to decide on when he has to go and we all need to respect that,” Yuvraj was quoted saying by Republic TV.
Dhoni and Yuvraj have a storied history for the Indian team right from winning a tense ODI in Pakistan for the Men in Blue to becoming the champions of the world in T20I in 2007 and lifting the 2011 World Cup at home. Yuvraj called time on his career this year after failing to earn a recall to the team and focusing on T20 franchises. He was seen playing in the Global T20 Canada recently.
He also mentioned that with the 2020 T20 World Cup approaching soon, the Indian team management should focus on youngsters before deciding the team. “You need to look at what’s going to be the best side in the next year. Players need to be encouraged and focus should be on the key players who will give their best performance for the team. Players will have to prove their best in the upcoming one year on the basis of which the World Cup team should be decided,” Yuvraj added.
September 19 had marked the 12th anniversary of Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in an over in the T20 World Cup 2007 against England’s Stuart Broad. The Punjab left-hander was the first batsman to achieve this feat in T20I cricket and second in international cricket.
