Yuvraj Singh vents his frustration after Punjab’s elimination from the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20
Punjab was knocked out on the basis of winning less matches than Tamil Nadu.
The 2019-20 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy has been severely marred by rain. A plethora of the matches were curtailed due to rain and a few of them were also called off due to the downpour across the country. The scenario was abject to such an extent that some of the abandoned matches in the first part of the domestic tournament had to be rescheduled later on.
The heavens kept opening up throughout the duration of the tournament and it ended up effecting three out of the four quarter-final matches, all of which took place in Karnataka. On October 20, the game between Karnataka and Puducherry at the Chinnaswamy didn’t saw rain intervening. However, the game between Delhi and Gujarat was reduced to 49 overs per side.

On Monday, October 21, the last two Quarter-final matches were scheduled in Alur. And much to the teams’ agony, the semi-finalists were decided by rain. Both encounters saw around 12 overs being played. Mumbai were cruising towards victory versus Chhattisgarh with their score at 95/0 in 11.3 overs. Due to the called off game, Chhattisgarh progressed to the semi-final.
The same is because they had won five games in the league stage compared to Mumbai’s four. Same was the case for Punjab in their match versus Tamil Nadu. Chasing 175, at one stage, Punjab were motoring along at 52/2 in 12.2 overs. But then rain arrived to play spoilsport and game couldn’t be completed. Tamil Nadu went to the semis on account of garnering more victories.
After Punjab’s elimination, Yuvraj Singh, the former Indian cricketer, wasn’t pleased by any stretch of the imagination. The Chandigarh-born southpaw questioned the format of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which didn’t have a reserve day for the knock-out matches.
The veteran took to Twitter and wrote, “Again, an unfortunate result for Punjab against TN in the Vijay Hazare tournament , again Punjab cruising and game abandoned due to bad weather, and on points we don’t go to semis ! Why don’t we have a reserve day ? Or is it domestic tournament it doesn’t really matter ?”
