Even though MS Dhoni has passed on the baton of captaincy to Virat Kohli back in January this year, evidence from the recent string of series does make it clear who the actual captain of the Indian team is while on the field. It is none other than the predecessor of Kohli himself, popularly known as Mahi Bhai in the team.
One half of India’s newfound spin twin, Yuzvendra Chahal, talked in detail about the dynamics of the Indian team whenever they take the field. Effectively, India has two captains by the names of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, but during the crunch situations of the game, it is MSD who calls the shots while Kohli protects the field out in the deep.
“Dhoni bhai is still our captain. Sometimes, when Kohli bhai fields at mid-on or long-on, then we need someone who can guide us too. It is not possible for Kohli to come up and tell what needs to be done. Then, Dhoni takes over,” revealed Yuzvendra Chahal according to his interview with Cricbuzz.
Dhoni bhai calls me Chotey: Chahal
“Dhoni signals Kohli to remain at his place. He says – tu wahi reh, mai dekh lunga (You stay there, I will handle). Actually, it saves time too. Dhoni has an abundance of experience with him. We all are lucky that we are sharing the field with him,” Chahal further made revelations.
Dhoni has had a reputation of calling the players by nicknames. From Jaddu to Ash and Bapu to Cheeku, Chahal too has a nickname of his own and therefore disclosed about it.
“Dhoni bhai is approachable. I know he has quit captaincy but we all know he will always remain the team’s captain. He calls me Chotey. He knows how to read a batsman’s mind. I don’t know how he does, but he manages brilliantly. He calls me and says, Chote isko bahar daal ya straight daal. I do the same and get the results. He is an amazing person,” concluded Chahal.
