ZIM vs IND: Deepak Chahar runs out Innocent Kaia at non-striker's end, doesn't appeal

The third ODI between Zimbabwe and India kicked off in Harare on August 22, Monday. India have already clinched the series after winning the first two games. Meanwhile, in the third ODI, India won the toss and elected to bat first. They posted a total of 289 for the loss of eight wickets, courtesy of a splendid hundred by Shubman Gill.

Zimbabwe’s chase began with Takudzwanashe Kaitano on strike and Deepak Chahar with the ball. The innings began in a dramatic manner as Chahar, who had set off to deliver the ball, stopped in his run-up as he entered the delivery stride after he spotted the non-striker, Innocent Kaia, backing too far out of the crease, to run him out at the bowler’s end before the ball was delivered. India, however, did not uphold the appeal, and the ball was called dead by the umpire.

Chahar flipped the bails off and walked back to his run-up with a wry smile on his face as the Kaia came back to his crease. As there was no appeal from the bowler or the captain KL Rahul, the matter didn’t go further.

During India’s innings, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul walked out to open and together added 63 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan was dismissed for 40 and Rahul for 30 and then came the all-important partnership between Gill and Ishan Kishan that steadied the ship.

Gill went on to score 130 runs off 97 balls, bringing up his maiden hundred in international cricket. Kishan, on the other hand, scored a well-made 50 runs off 61 balls. None of the batters who followed, barring Sanju Samson, who scored 15, went past a score of nine. For Zimbabwe, fast bowler Brad Evans was the pick of the bowlers picking up five wickets for 54 runs in 10 overs.

Victor Nyauchi and Luke Jongwe also chipped in with a wicket each. Zimbabwe, with a target of 290 in hand, needed a good start with the bat. However, the top-order woes continue for the African side as the opening stand lasted for only 15 balls, scoring seven runs, as Kaia was dismissed by Chahar for six runs off nine balls.
