India has already clinched the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe by winning the first two games, and the third one was a dead rubber. But even then, it was important for the Men in Blue as they looked for a 3-0 whitewash, and the batters took the Indian side a step closer to fulfilling that goal. India skipper KL Rahul elected to bat first in this game, but one thing that did not go in India’s way was Ishan Kishan’s unlucky dismissal.

The game started with Shikhar Dhawan and Rahul adding 63 runs to the opening partnership before the latter was dismissed. While Dhawan and Shubman Gill have been in the news lately for their brilliant partnerships, the former could not save his wicket and eventually lost his wicket to Brad Evans, who bagged his second wicket for the day.

The openers had been sent off, and all eyes were on Gill and Kishan, who looked in some fine form as they built up the innings. The duo played a very composed knock and went on to add more than a hundred runs for the third wicket. Gill reached his nervous nineties when Kishan claimed his half-century. But confusion between the two led to the latter being run out.

Gill, while batting on 97*, faced Evans’ delivery in the 43rd over when the latter made a huge appeal for his lbw. While the umpire disagreed and did not give a decision in Zimbabwe’s favour, Kishan started running from the non-striker’s end. Trying to steal a single amid the chaos, Kishan has covered the distance when Gill was taken aback due to the opponent’s appeal.

As Munyonga, the fielder, rushed in from the point and whacked the stumps with a direct hit, Kishan, who was far away from the wicket, unfortunately, could not get back on time and as a result had to walk back. Zimbabwe opted for a review and while the UltraEdge confirmed that Gill was safe, Kishan proved to be the unlucky one in the game.

Gill’s magnificent ton leads to India posting a humungous target

Post Kishan’s dismissal, Gill took three easy singles and claimed his maiden ODI ton to achieve the feat in just 82 deliveries. Gill’s glorious century overshadowed all the disappointing dismissals as India finished off scoring 289 runs in their 50-over quota.
