Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has removed Graeme Cremer as the skipper of the national side after the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. Zimbabwe hosted the recently concluded ICC World Cup Qualifiers through which Afghanistan and Windies went ahead and will feature in the marquee event next year. The home side lost agonisingly by 3 runs against UAE which was a must-win encounter for them. However, the cricket board has taken some stern steps now and have also given the ultimatum to the coaching staff to resign as well.
There are some of the big names in the coaching staff of Zimbabwe with Heath Streak being the coach of the team. Former South African Lance Klusener is the batting coach while Douglas Hondo is the bowling coach. If Streak is removed from the helm, he will be the fourth coach to be axed since 2013 by ZC when Alan Butcher resigned from the position.
Cremer was informed of the decision earlier
According to the reports in Cricbuzz, Graeme Cremer was informed of the decision to sack him as the captain on Thursday (March 29) itself. Moreover, the support staff including the coach Heath Streak has been given the ultimatum to step down from their respective positions. Brendan Taylor is expected to replace Cremer as the captain of the team.
A brief email was sent to Streak by Faisal Hasnain on Thursday in which ZC’s managing director wrote, “Further to our discussions, please give your technical staff (and yourself included) until 3 PM tomorrow to formally resign. After which time the technical team can consider themselves dismissed and relieved of their duties with immediate effect.”
Interestingly, the support staff has taken the help of legal council to determine a response to Zimbabwe Cricket. The axing of the coaches and support staff is not only limited to the senior side as the U19 and A team is also facing the heat. The U19 team coach Stephen Mangongo and A team coach Wayne James are also expected to be removed from their roles after the side’s dismal performances in their respective tours. It seems that the cricket board wants to bring in new people and hence they are overhauling the coaching staff.
