Dictator Robert Mugabe’s time has ended but it seems the ground reality in Zimbabwe has not changed much. Recently, the country’s national cricketer Brendan Taylor faced a harrowing experience as his wife was mugged outside their home in the capital city of Harare. The 33-year-old tweeted about the incident and appealed to the local residents to remain alert amid reports of increased crime in the city.
According to the local media, criminal activities in the country have increased since the intensification of power failure in Harare this week with the criminals apparently taking advantage of the situation in the city’s suburbs.
In his tweet, Taylor wrote, “Just had an alarming situation outside my house. I was waiting for my wife’s return in my driveway. I started hearing her screaming about 100m from my gate, she was getting mugged by 4 armed men. I ran outside and they sped away in red Honda Fit.”
Brendan Taylor, who has played 28 Tests, 188 ODIs and 30 T20Is for Zimbabwe since 2004, said the thieves could only take his wife’s handbag and asserted that things could have been worse. “People are getting desperate, be vigilant when entering your property and try keep off the roads after dark. With all this load shedding we’re easy targets,” he further wrote in the tweet.

Police authorities also appeal to residents
Officers at Avondale Police Station which is the closest to Taylor’s residence, also took to the social media to urge the local residents to be alert. “We note with concern the crime activity in our area in the last 8 weeks,” a message on the station’s social media page read.
“Unregistered vehicles continue to expose our community to crime and we now are appealing to all our Avondale residents and Security Structures, Neighbourhood Watches, Whatsapp Media Platforms to be on high alert for any suspicious individuals or vehicles.”
Taylor, who has captained Zimbabwe in international cricket, has scored over 8,000 runs with 16 hundreds. However, the talented batsman is set to miss the World Cup this year in England as Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the tournament – first time since 1983.
